CfP: Please Enjoy! Studying playful experiences with mobile technologies (Workshop at MobileHCI2011)

A full day workshop at MobileHCI2011 (http://www.mobilehci2011.org/) in Stockholm, Sweden, August 30, 2011.

Submission deadline: April 30, 2011
Notification: May 15, 2011
Camera ready due: May 30, 2011

This workshop aims to explore different approaches and challenges in studying playfulness as a mode of interacting with mobile technology. Researchers, designers and developers with interest in this theme are welcome to participate in a full day activity of demos, presentations and discussions. While authors will present their current work, our aim is to primarily concentrate on discussion, collaboration, and generation of novel work rather than presentation of existing work. Papers will be pre-circulated to encourage informed discussion.

Background:
Playful, spontaneous and joyful experiences are an increasingly important theme in HCI – drawing on a vision of a society where enjoyment, experience and play are essential and important for human well being. In empirical studies, the increased focus on natural use settings shows that enjoyment is impossible to neglect completely from how people use technology.

By playful we here refer to aspects of interactions that provide pleasure or amusement. However, rather than an intrinsic property of an activity this is to a large extent a matter of human attitude. An open question is how to study and evaluate a phenomenon that is experiential, context dependent and different for each person.

Apart from short research presentations, each participant is expected to bring and present an example scenario with an existing mobile system that they consider playful. This will be used to discuss how playfulness can be manifested and triggered in design. A more general goal is to explore different ways that playfulness is approached in research on mobile technology.

To participate:

Submit a position paper to ylva@sics.se, by April 30, 2011.

Papers should be 2-4 pages in MobileHCI extended abstracts format (http://www.mobilehci2011.org/node/47), and related to your experiences with playful experiences in your concrete research practice. You are welcome (but not required) to also send in a free format appendix, movie, doodle, sketch, or application.

Notification of acceptance will be May 15, 2011.

Organizers

The workshop is organized by Ylva Fernaeus (SICS & Mobile Life), Jussi Holopainen (Nokia Research Center) and Tilde Bekker (TU/e Eindhoven).
