The Department of Film and Media, Faculty of Arts and Science at Queen’s University invites applications for a Queen’s National Scholar (QNS) position in the field of Creative Industries in the Global City. This is a tenure-track or tenured appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, with a preferred starting date of July 1, 2015, subject to budgetary approval. Position Overview
Candidates must possess a PhD in a relevant field. The main criterion for selection in the field of Creative Industries in the Global City is demonstrated academic and teaching excellence. The successful candidate will provide evidence of high quality scholarly output that demonstrates independent research, peer assessed publications and the potential of external research funding. In addition, the candidate will display strong potential for outstanding teaching contributions at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and an ongoing commitment to academic and pedagogical excellence in support of the department’s programs. The successful candidate will also be expected to make substantive contributions through service to the department, to the Faculty, to the University, and/or the broader community. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Creative Industries are understood to comprise the dominant economic sector in the global cities of the 21st century, a new economic reality of precarious and entrepreneurial labour associated with cultural production. The successful candidate will have an ongoing multi-city research project on Creative Industries, undertaken through the lenses of media and performance and with particular attention to social diversity and vulnerable populations. Teaching, researching, and mentoring diverse groups of students at the intersections of the creative fields, the QNS will work to deepen awareness of the historical and contemporary practices of cultural industries and their impact on creative labour, human rights, and cultural citizenship in cities. In doing so they will contribute to our understanding of the complex and shifting relationships among creative practices and politics, new technologies, creative institutions, economies, and individuals in global cities.
Consistent with the interdisciplinary and global initiatives of both the Strategic Research Plan and the Academic Plan of Queen’s University, the proposed QNS will be located within an international research network bridging academic communities, public institutions, and creative industries associated with urban mega-events. To that end, this QNS would participate in inaugurating an international and multidisciplinary centre at Queen’s for the study of Creative Industries, Global Cities and Cultural Innovation.
The QNS will also teach and co-teach courses that combine creativity and experiential learning, theory with practice, and local and global perspectives on producing, promoting, consuming and critiquing creative cultural productions. In the process, this QNS will enable active, engaged, applied research and learning opportunities for Queen’s students in Film and Media, Drama and the Stage and Screen Program, Geography, and the Graduate Program in Cultural Studies.
The Department of Film and Media at Queen’s has an outstanding reputation for strong teaching and scholarship, with a 45-year history based on a commitment to the intersection of theory and practice. The Department is housed in the new Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts, a state-of-the-art facility with teaching and learning environments including a production studio, film screening theatre, sound recording studio, and a digital lab.
