Games and Texts is the monthly research talk by the Games As Art Center. Three talks will explore theoretical and practical manners in which texts and games are connected. Frans Mäyrä is the Professor of Information Studies and Interactive Media, with specialization in digital culture and game studies in the Tampere University, Finland. He is the founder and head of Tampere University Game Research Lab. Professor Mäyrä has published on topics that range from information technologies, science fiction and fantasy to the demonic tradition, the concept of identity and role-playing games. His talk will discuss the history and significance of player-generated texts in table-top RPG history.

Jukka Särkijärvi has a background in game studies and English philology. He has co-edited five non-fiction books about role-playing games and larp. His other research interests realized worlds, vast narratives, as well as media representations of gamers. He is also a professional publisher at Myrrysmiehet Oy. His talk will discuss the practical process by which certain games, especially table top role-playing games, become published as books for sale

Espen Aarseth (Dr Art, MAE) is chair professor of game studies and dean of the School of Creative Media at the City University of Hong Kong, and a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters and of the Academia Europaea. His research interests includes the study of games, digital culture and the history of media, transmedia, and character studies. He is also the founding editor in chief of Game Studies (.org, 2001-present) and the co-founder of six conference series, among them are Games and Literary Theory, The Philosophy of Computer Games, and The History of Games. His talk is called Massive Singleplayer Games as Supernovels, and will discuss games with massive amounts of texts from the perspective of the novel.
