Solidarity Spotlight

This year we are honored to present Piuli Basu, a PhD student at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta, as the 2025 recipient of the DiGRA Solidarity Fund. The award recognizes her exceptional scholarship on how protest movements are gamified in social media spaces, which can be read here.

About Piuli Basu and Their Research

Piuli Basu is a PhD student at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta, working under the supervision of Dr. Souvik Mukherjee. She has a background in Sociology and Women’s Studies. Their work delves into the sociality of protests in a technologised world, with a focus on popular networking platforms, drawing from concepts arising out of studies in videogame spaces. She explores the question that when resisting is transformed into code, how do we relate to our allies?

Their Experience Attending DiGRA as a Solidarity Recipient

“Coming from a country where public institutions for Humanities and Social Science research are fund-starved, attending an international conference like DiGRA was far-fetched. Thanks go first to my supervisor Dr Mukherjee, who informed and encouraged me about the Solidarity Fund that could allow me to attend the conference in person. Receiving the fund has been the highlight of my career thus far, and I am deeply grateful to the DiGRA Board. At the conference, I received valuable feedback on my work and learned about the latest trends in Digital Game Studies. I was also able to build connections and develop a network that might become the bridge towards a global career, which would have been difficult without an in-person presence through the Solidarity Fund.”

About the Solidarity Fund

Since 2022, the DiGRA Executive Board has financially supported the travel expenses of distinguished scholars from economically disadvantaged countries via our Solidarity Fund. We recognize that the qualities which make exceptional scholars are not limited by funding or geographical boundaries, however the ability to travel to attend a conference are. We look forward to expanding the fund, and the number of members it can serve, next year.
