DiGRA 2026 Solidarity Fund Open

We are pleased to announce the return of the DiGRA Solidarity fund. The purpose of the fund is to provide means for students and early-career researchers who lack institutional support for international travel to attend DiGRA International events and present their work. Applicants living in Low-Income or Lower-middle-income countries (according to World Bank Classification) will be prioritised.

This year there are two types of funding available: a bursary of up to €1,000 to attend the conference in person (three available) OR an online registration fee waiver (ten available).

The application period for the DiGRA International conference 2026 in Maynooth, Ireland is from February 16th to February 28th, 2026. You can apply by filling out the Solidarity Fund Application form. The Solidarity Fund Committee aims to make the decisions regarding the award of funds by March 14th. All applicants will be personally informed of the decision.

Please read the FAQ before completing the application form linked at the end of the document.

Solidarity Fund FAQ

1.I am from ____, can I apply?

Yes you can, but scholars who are living in Low-Income or Lower-middle-income countries (according to World Bank Classification) are prioritised. This does not mean all outside of those countries would not be qualified. Please apply if you think you need the funding.

2. I am a PhD student/postdoc/professor/etc. Can I apply?

Yes you can, but scholars that are still starting out their careers are prioritised.

3. How much will the stipend be?

The maximum award size is €1,000. Applications should include a budget with itemized line items and not simply ask for the maximum amount. This year, we are also offering 10 online/remote registrations for those unable to travel.

4. How will the stipend be paid out?

The sum outlined in the submitted budget will be awarded as a lump sum prior to the conference. Receipts for all purchases will need to be submitted after the conference.

5. What expenses will the fund cover?

Economy airfare, DiGRA registration, DiGRA membership, refundable hotel/hostel bookings.

6. Do I need to keep my receipts?

Yes, even though the funds are released as a lump sum, solidarity fund recipients are responsible for turning receipts in no later than 30 days after the conference ends to digrainternational@gmail.com for our annual audit. A failure to do so may result in removal of funds or a ban on applying for future funds.

7. Do I need to stay for the whole duration of the conference?

Yes.

8. When is the application period?

February 16th to February 28th, 2026.

9. When will I know if my application was successful?

We aim to notify applicants by email on 14th of March, 2026.

10. Will I be given feedback on the application and/or an explanation why I did not receive the stipend?

No, but the travel bursary always aims to prioritise the scholars who have not attended or presented a paper in-person at DiGRA, from a less represented group/region without any other means of receiving travel funding, and has a paper accepted that highlights an important contribution to the field in an area that is under-examined.

11. My accepted paper is with co-authors. Can we all apply for the stipend?

No. If you have a co-authored paper, please select one author to serve as the presenter and have them apply to the fund.

12. I don’t have a paper/presentation/anything accepted into the conference, can I still get the stipend?

No, the stipend is meant for scholars to present their work and a requirement to get the stipend is to have some work to present.

13. I cannot access the online form!

Send an email to thomas.apperley[@]tuni.fi and we will figure it out.

14. Does DiGRA have other funds/grants that I can apply for?

No. We currently only have the travel bursary. But if you have ideas for something else, please let us know!
