*Job description*

The Faculty of Science at Utrecht University is seeking to appoint a full professor in Technologies for Games to complement and reinforce existing strengths in Game Technology within the faculty. The appointee should have significant expertise in game technology, specifically in any of the fields of animation, simulation, rendering/visualization or modelling. She/he will develop new initiatives, aiming at research programs in Game Technology and play a significant role in the strongly established international scientific communities in this domain. She/he will lead the acquisition of external research funds, both at the national and international levels, and the dissemination, of research results and its applications, to the relevant research communities. The Full Professor has a leading role in teaching and supervision. She/he will contribute to the department’s curriculum development at BSc, MSc and PhD levels. The Full Professor plays an active role in the leadership and management of the department and/or faculty.


Candidates must have an excellent track record in research, teaching and leadership, as exemplified by:


– a PhD degree in Computer Science or a closely related subject;

– an excellent publication record, including papers in high impact journals and conference proceedings;

– strong knowledge of game technology, specifically in the fields of animation, simulation, rendering/visualization, modelling, or interaction;

– proven ability to obtain extramural funding for research and to provide leadership in collaborative research programs, including the supervision of PhD students.


– experience and enthusiasm for teaching and student supervision at Bachelor, Master, and PhD level;

– experience and leadership in curriculum development.

Academic leadership:

– an active role in leading (national and international) activities in the area of the chair and participation in academic communities;

– an established international network of research partnerships with other  leading research groups and institutions;

– experience in management roles at department or faculty level.

We offer a permanent position as full professor at 0.8 ­ 1.0 FTE. The gross salary depends on qualifications and experience and ranges between €5,260 and €7,659 per month (salary scale H2 of the Collective Labour Agreement of the Dutch Universities). The salary is supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and an end­of­year bonus of 8.3% per year.  In addition we offer a pension scheme, collective insurance schemes and flexible employment conditions (multiple choice model). The research of the department is grouped into four divisions: Software Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Worlds and Interaction Technology.

The Department offers bachelor programs in computer science and information science, and four English language research master programs in Artificial Intelligence, Business Informatics, Computing Science, and Game and Media Technology. High enrolment figures and good student ratings make the education very successful.

Applications will be considered by the selection committee in February and shortlisted candidates will then be invited to speak informally with the University in late February, followed by formal interviews in March. Selection of and negotiations with the preferred candidate and final campus visits will take place thereafter. The faculty may use an assessment as an instrument in the selection procedure.
