You will be expected to develop a research programme, aim at excellent scientific output and support and promote national and international research collaborations in the field of Communication Science and in the context of the School for Mass Communication Research. Your research will focus on the development of insights, theories and advanced research techniques from the field of Communication Science in the area of media effects. This area covers the theoretical and empirical study of the social and/or psychological influences of traditional mass media and/or social media on individuals and groups in our society, and is situated at the crossroads of such areas as ‘Mass Communication’ and ‘MediaPsychology’. For this position, your profile need not necessarily be limited to experience in traditional media effects research, but may also refer to other types of uses and effects studies, such as prosocial/positive effects of the media.

Your research is specifically expected to relate to the focus of The Leuven School for Mass Communication Research, which conducts fundamental (rather than policy-oriented) research on the use of mass media, social media and ICT, and how these media may harm or enhance an individual’s wellbeing in his or her societal context. In its research, the School describes the relationship between exposure to information and entertainment media and various components of wellbeing, and develops theoretical insight into the underlying mechanisms of these media effects. Its work draws on, and strives to contribute to, the most advanced techniques and insights available in communication studies, cognitive and developmental psychology, sociology, and public health.
