Job: Faculty Position in Virtual Environments – Assistant Professor,Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

The Department of the Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute invites applicants for a full-time, tenure-track position in virtual environments, 3D animation, and new media art. We seek an artist whose work demonstrates creative and critical engagement with new forms of digital and virtual art in one or more of the following areas: experimental digital games and artgames; software art, interactive and computational media; interactive installation and physical computing; immersive environments, virtual and augmented reality; internet art; sound design & music for virtual environments, and 3D modeling and animation.

The Department of the Arts has a 40-year history of innovation in electronic arts, offering unique undergraduate degrees, a nationally-ranked MFA degree, and a Ph.D. in Electronic Arts. The successful candidate will support undergraduate and graduate curricula in the visual arts, animation, games and simulation, and/or computational media, and may also join the nationally-ranked Games and Simulation Arts and Sciences program, a diverse interdisciplinary, inter-departmental faculty dedicated to creative and meaningful games and simulations of all kinds.

The successful candidate will also join an interdisciplinary research initiative in Immersive Intelligent Learning Environments, designing and building new forms of technologically-mediated learning combining games, narrative, artificial intelligence, and immersive environments.

Founded in 1824, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is the nation’s oldest technological university. With approximately 5,000 undergraduate and 2,500 graduate students from across the country and around the world, the university offers more than 145 programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. Rensselaer is located in Troy, New York, the heart of the “Tech Valley” region of the Hudson River Valley. The university’s Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) offers scholars and students opportunities for creative interdisciplinary research in the arts, performance technologies, science, and engineering.

The ideal candidate will hold a terminal degree or foreign degree equivalent. Candidates are expected to develop a substantial program of research leading to external funding and peer-reviewed publications, exhibitions, and/or screenings. Evidence of teaching effectiveness at the college level is strongly desired. Screening of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
